For NSD-S Hub's third Southern Talks, Dr. Alexander Vines of Chatham House discusses what China has achieved in Africa so far, with primary focus on its military and economic efforts in the region and its intentions for the future.

His presentation will account for the first 30 minutes of our 1 hour webinar. The remainder will be a Q&A session where those registered can participate.

Dr. Alex Vines OBE

Chatham House Research Director of Regions and Risk 


Dr Alex Vines OBE has led the Africa Programme at Chatham House since 2002 and became Research Director of Regions and Risk in 2023. He has chaired the UN Panel of Experts on Côte d’Ivoire from 2005 to 2007 and was a member of the UN Panel of Experts on Liberia from 2001 to 2003. He was also a member of the Commonwealth Observer Group to Mozambique in 2019 (and Ghana in 2016) and a UN election officer in Mozambique (1994) and Angola (1992). He has extensively studied, worked, and taught on African affairs for more than 30 years, and was awarded an OBE in 2008 in recognition of his work that includes founding and developing Chatham House’s Africa programme. Prior to joining Chatham House Alex was at Human Rights Watch where his work included business and human rights.

The Southern Talks Webinars is an NSD-S Hub initiative that focuses on the Middle East and Africa and sees guest speakers offer a regional perspective on topics such as Conflict resolution & Security, Socio-Economic issues, Terrorism, Technology and Human Security. 

Each webinar lasts an hour with 30 minutes dedicated to Q&A from the online audience.
