Women in leadership positions have proven to be major contributors to the development of sustainable peace. In Libya and Tunisia, women play an important role at a variety of levels in government and in society, and yet they remain underrepresented in aspects of decision-making.

In this upcoming workshop, taking place in Pozzuoli, Italy, regional SMEs discuss how to leverage the position of women leaders in Libya and Tunisia, and how to better support their contribution to stability and security across the wider region.

Highlights

  • This workshop will host a diverse group of women leaders from the region, who will provide their insights and experience from different backgrounds such as government, academia and society.
  • This workshop will provide a variety of perspectives, both from NGOs (Human Rights) and governmental officials.
  • This workshop can inspire the next generation of women leaders, through highlighting the diverse approaches to life of the participants.

Background

Women leadership
Since 2020, 17 women have participated in the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum to build consensus on a unified governance framework and agreements to restore Libya's sovereignty and the democratic legitimacy of its institutions, including national elections initially scheduled for December 2021.
Tunisia is seen as a leader in women's rights in the Arab world. However, some say electoral reforms introduced by President Kais Saied, the President of Tunisia since 2019, have made it more difficult for female candidates to run for office. At the same time, he has announced his commitment to women's representation, appointing the Arab world's first female Prime Minister, Najla Bouden Romdhane, and a woman as Chief of Staff, his closest and most powerful aide.

NATO and WPS
This Workshop is in line with NATO’s approach as expressed in the 2022 Strategic Concept, where the crosscutting importance of integrating the Women, Peace and Security agenda across NATO core tasks is emphasized.
Its relevance has been expressed by NATO on several other occasions. In the Madrid Summit Declaration, issued by NATO Heads of State and Government participating in the meeting of the North Atlantic Council in 2022, it was declared that a robust Women, Peace and Security agenda, incorporating gender perspectives, is to be advanced across NATO.
Cooperation.

Cooperation
This event is co-organized with the Union of the Mediterranean Universities (UNIMED). Members of the Arab Women Organizations (AWO) and members of Universities from UNIMED Tunisia and Libya will actively participate to the workshop.
