NSD-S HUB WS ON INFORMAL GOVERNANCE OF NON-STATE ARMED GROUPS IN THE SAHEL

The Kofi Annan international peacekeeping training center and the NSD-S Hub are cohosting a three-day workshop in ACCRA , GHANA to share and discuss Informal Governance of Non-State Armed Groups in the Sahel. The Sahel region has witnessed several examples over the past 20 years of NSAGs attempting to enforce governance in areas under their control, ranging from setting up courts to providing health services to establishing border crossings. Understanding such cases is crucial to improve situational awareness of the behavior of NSAGs and the most appropriate policy responses. The aim of the workshop is to discuss and provide important regional feedback on a draft of the research paper produced by a team composed of HUB researchers and an academic from the University of Kent (UK). The research paper will offer an overview of the range of cases of informal governance by politically-motivated armed groups and organized criminal groups as well as two in-depth case studies.
