World Energy Council

In this scenarios refresh, the Council has adopted a medium-term time horizon of 2040 and focused on the implications of broader and disruptive innovation for the energy industry. Report of the Secretary-General on Somalia

The present report, submitted pursuant to paragraph 22 of Security Council resolution 2461 (2019) and paragraph 55 of resolution 2431 (2018), provides information on the implementation of those resolutions, including on the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS). The report covers major developments in Somalia during the period from 5 May to 4 August 2019.

Somalia - 2019 Article IV Consultation-Second Review Under the Staff-Monitored Program

Report of the UN Secretary-General on UNAMI

The present report is submitted pursuant to Security Council resolution 2470, in which the Secretary-General was requested to report to the Council every three months on the progress made towards the fulfilment of all the responsibilities of UNAMI. The report covers key developments relating to Iraq, an update on the activities of the United Nations in Iraq and the briefing to the Security Council provided by the Special Representative for Iraq and Head of UNAMI.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard: A Strong Family of Four Generations

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has seized an oil tanker carrying 700,000 liters of fuel in the Gulf late July 2019, according to Iranian state media. This growing role of the Revolutionary Guard has followed the announcement of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, of the appointment of Hossein Salami (59) as the new commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the institution has entered a new, more combative phase.

Creating an Enabling Environment for Renewable Energy in Resource-Rich MENA Countries

Investment in renewable energy sources is a no-regret strategy for hydrocarbon exporting economies of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). It is also in line with some of the pre-renewable energy sector reforms in the region. A holistic approach to energy policy, including establishing stable regulatory frameworks, robust independent institutions, and effective risk mitigation measures will be critical to advancing renewables in the region.
