FEMWISE Workshop on Empowering Women in Leadership to Improve Stability
From 15-18 October 2019, the African Union Commission’s Peace and Security Department, in collaboration with the NATO Strategic Direction South-Hub (NSD Hub) held a week-long workshop on “Empowering Women in Leadership to Improve Stability.” Held in Naples, Italy, the workshop was part of the efforts by NATO to generate knowledge, build skills, strengthen relationships and exchange strategies amongst frontline women peacemakers, peacebuilders and preventive diplomacy experts working on various issues of justice and genuine security for all people.
The workshop provided a platform for women in Africa to showcase and enhance their visibility in promoting security and stability, ensuring that their voices are heard in global policy discussions on these subject matters. Furthermore, through the workshop, participants reflected on the peace and security challenges emerging in their respective contexts and brainstormed on strategies that can be used by FemWise, the AU and NATO to comprehensively address these.
The workshop demonstrated that FemWise is a huge resource for a more informed understanding of the peace and security threats in the Africa region., To this end, the need to capitalize on mechanisms such as FemWise is critical if a more inclusive and sustainable peace is to be created. Against this background, participants called on both the AU and NATO NSD-S Hub to continue creating such platforms for women to dialogue, reflect and strategize.
